As well as our school chess clubs there is plenty more chess activity happening in and around Cheshire.
Cheshire Junior Chess Club (CJCC)
CJCC is our flagship junior chess club taking place outside of school hours. We welcome players of all abilities – but specifically it is for keen players who want to get extra practice outside of their school chess club. We meet every Wednesday in term time from 1730 to 1900 at the Heald Green Village Hall.
See our dedicated CJCC page.
Other children’s chess clubs
UK Chess Challenge (UKCC)
We run the World’s largest chess competition!
Every year 40,000 children across the UK compete in the UKCC and up to 7,000 children go on to compete at one of the 53 Megafinals held regionally. The UKCC is all inclusive with every child receiving a certificate of participation and prizes such as medals and mascots.
Every player in each of our schools will get chance to play in the schools stage beginning in January each year. The top players will qualify for the Megafinals – the nearest events take place in Cheadle Hulme, Oldham and Chester.
School’s Team Championships
All of our school’s will be entered into National Primary School’s Chess Championships (NPSCC). This prestigious event has been running for 49 years! Schools can enter an under 11 and under 9 team – all teams are 5 players plus one reserve.
In the Autumn term we will select the players to represent the school in the opening heats which take place from January to March at a local school. The semi finals take place in May/June and the final in July.
This year two of our schools reached the semi finals – Manchester Grammar School and North Cheshire Jewish Primary School. Out of 42 teams who attended the Bristol semi-final we finished 7th and 13th respectively.
We are also looking to setup a local school’s team championship in Cheshire and Manchester – so watch this space!
Cheshire and North Wales County Team
We run a Cheshire and North Wales under 11, under 9 and girls under 11 team in the national county championships. The best players from our schools and Cheshire Junior Chess Club will be invited to take part in County training events in January and February each year.
The Northern zonal qualifiers and the finals take place in March and April each year.
This year was an extremely successful one for the County. The under 11s won the Northern zonal with 43/60 and finished a creditable 11th in the final with 25/60 despite missing a number of our best players.
Both the under 9s and the girls under 11s competed in the finals and fought hard against very strong Southern opposition.
We are confident as our players gain more experience we will start troubling the best counties in the country very soon.
